Re: English Devitt's. Many years ago I was doing research in the London Musuem in their rare books collection. I found that an Andrew Devitt migrated from Ulster to London in the 1840's. The Dutch story may have some credibility, but I have never found anyone with the proof. My own family said that the DeWitt's came with William of Orange to fight in the Battle of the Boyne. But, no proof. This may be a way of explaining why many Ulster Devitt's are Protestant while loads of other Devitt's are Catholic, not wanting to claim any catholic heritage. Irish researchers show the name Devitt to be of ancient celtic origen, you can goggle that and finds lots of information. Tom Devitt

I'm also of the DeVitts from Ontario (Cartwright, Durham Co) who moved to MI in the 1880's. Isabella DeVitt was my great grandmother, her parents were Wright DeVitt and Mary Ann Ginn. Both of her parents died by the time she was 5 and she and other sibs moved to Elk, Sanilac MI and were raised by the oldest sister Jane DeVitt Clemence.
